we're in sweden!!!!!

i haven't been able to get to a computer in a few days. i'm sure you have all been bitting your nails in suspense, so here's the update. john and i spent two days in copenhagen couch surfing with jakob and marie. the city was great(and carleen of course we saw the little mermaid, she says hello and loves you as well). the most impressive thing in the city which i was not aware of, nor had ever heard of is Christiana. look it up for more information, because it will take me too long to explain, but basically it is an old military camp that hippies have inhabited and been living in rent free since 1971. it's a whole different world once you walk intop the walls of Christiana! absolutely one of the most interesting experiances i've ever had!! after copenhagen we rode north into helsingor denmark were we camped for the night. the next morning we took a ferry into sweden. from helsingbor sweden we had well over 200km to ride and two days to get to gothenburg, the next city in which we would be couch surfing. it was two extremely intense days of riding. yesterday we rode almost 12 hours! we rode about 160km yesterday and 130 the previous day. my legs hurt!!! we had and extra 30km of riding because we are also hitting up every World Heritage Site along the way. we'll have seen 4 after sweden. so now we have two days in gothenburg sweden to rest a bit! we are couch surfing with Inga-Theraesa (who we refer to as mother theraesa, because she is so sweet!) and her boyfriend Ulysess who is equally as kind! couch surfing has been such a great experiance!!! i highly highly recomend it to anyone who ever travels. you get a perspective into a city and a culture that you just cannot get from a city tour. it's been so enjoyable so far. so john and i are going to go see the sites for a bit then meet up with our hosts for dinner!!!

  1. Christiana sounds absolutely wonderful. What a trek you are doing. It's no wonder your legs hurt. Couch surfing sounds as if it is the way to travel. Thanks for sharing this. Aloha and safe travels as always :)

  2. So you really crossed the border into another Kingdom! I envy you for that but certainly not for the 160 km. Your poor legs! At least your saddles must be good!
Enjoy Sweden and the great people there.

  3. yes, good to read something from you after those few quiet days;)Isn't little mermaid just like "little man piss" in Brussels or Mona Lisa in Luwr??? You walk around and look for it for hours- absolutly on the list of things "to see" and in the end it turns out to be so....small!!! ;):):)but it's worth seeing after all!
Almost 300 km in 2 days!!! NICE!!!I'm proud of you! and I see some seriuos competition here ( you both know what I mean ;) )
Enjoy your free days in Goteborg and your couchsurfing experiance! This way of discovering the world is much better then "the offical one" through the city tour or any guide book!
    talk to you soon!

  4. Hello John and Carrie,

Glad to hear you reach Sweden. 160 KM in a day, now this looks like biking ! Yesterday we did the "round of ED" again. (for the US people, this is not erectile dysfunction, although if you bike as much as John it will be possible ;-) , but ED means Eindhovens Dagblad, the newspaper from Eindhoven).
Last year we did this same trip, and John joined us, as his first training for the trip he is doing now. That time he took the train back home, but now it seems he becomes a real biker !!
John and Carrie, keep on going......

  5. Hey guys! I've been having problems with Google and Blogger all day, so I didn't get a chance to check in with you until nearly 12 hours after you posted. Look at how your readership is growing! I think we're all biking around the North Sea vicariously through the two of you. Hope you enjoy Sweden! I haven't been there yet, so I can't make any recommendations this time. Are you going to give us some pictures soon, Carrie?
